A board for the next design evaluation
Prototype fabrication produces the bare boards needed for evaluation, assembly and the next design revision. Identify the part number and revision so the fabricated board can be matched to your engineering records.
Keep the file package consistent
Send matching artwork, drill data, outline and manufacturing notes. For multilayer boards, include the intended stackup. Describe any material, impedance or special-hole requirements before the quotation is prepared.
Plan the follow-on build
After evaluation, mark changes explicitly. A new file package should state whether it replaces the previous revision. Pilot quantities and repeat orders require confirmation of the new quantity, scope and delivery arrangement.
Prototype planning priorities
Use the first build to evaluate the approved design and manufacturing assumptions. Identify the features being evaluated and any measurements needed to support the next revision.
Make quotations comparable
Compare quotations against the same board specification and deliverables. A lower total based on a different material, finish, copper construction or verification scope is not a like-for-like comparison.
| Quotation item | Confirm before release |
|---|---|
| Design basis | File revision, stackup and approved engineering clarifications. |
| Board construction | Material, copper, thickness, finish and mechanical features. |
| Verification | Electrical testing, special measurements and required reports. |
| Order scope | Quantity, tooling assumptions, destination and delivery basis. |
Changes between quotation and manufacture
Identify any revised files or requirements before the order is released. A change in material, construction, quantity or test scope may require the quotation and schedule to be reviewed. Do not combine a new artwork revision with an older drawing without explaining the differences.
Questions, answered
Before your next build
Are prototypes assembled boards?
This page describes bare-board prototyping. If you also need PCB assembly, include that scope in your inquiry with the available assembly files.
What can delay a prototype order?
Incomplete files, conflicting specifications, unresolved material choices and unapproved engineering questions can delay release. Confirm the final fabrication package and delivery basis before manufacture.
